My opinion? 
Knowledge is power and we need to keep programs like these funded, not only for our benefit, but for the advancement of mankind in general.  If not us, then who?

Don't we all question our existence?  Our purpose?  Our time? 
And who isn't intrigued by the extraterrestrial? 
The endless possibilities of time and space?
